WHY IS IRONLAK YOUR WEAPON OF CHOICE?

Using Ironlak will best answer the question, but basically it is so vibrant, thick and quick drying, so you can lay down a heap of layers easily and has great pressure for any situation and technique. Personally I feel a great confidence when I hold a ’lak can in my hand and know I will produce my best work using this paint. Enough said!

HISTORY:

Since I can remember I always loved hieroglyphics and ancient letterforms for their beauty and structure so this was my first influence in graffiti letters. When I would learn a new word in primary school I would draw it as a piece, all in lead pencil (bubble letters, a small fade with highlights and stars).

Sahara was the first word I drew as a piece back around ’84. For years I just drew my family members names and enjoyed drawing elaborate words with intricate coloured patterns. While riding the tram or trains as a young kid I saw graffiti which really impacted me without understanding it's meaning or nature and soon after I started documenting them by drawing the letters on paper and colouring them as I remembered.

By 1988 I was writing around the neighbourhood with pastel crayons, shoe dye, chalk and small markers, then later with solids, 20mm markers and cans. In 1990 I did my first piece – a TNE chromie (standing for Tune) in the street.

In the early 90s I found inspiration locally from the technical artists like Torcha, Manet, Rank, Masica, React and Tense; then later from the many Belair line writers. Finally getting my hands on Subway Art and magazines like Hype from Australia opened up a whole world of style to us all and I was heavily drawn to artists like Dondi, Arab, Seen, Dero, Wane, T-kid, Skeme, Blade, Puppet, Dwane, Toast, Dare, Swet, CMP, Delta, Pone, Seemsoe, Daim, Mode 2; and from Australia; Puzle, Jors, Merda, Peril, Unique, Kade, Scram and Jelous. From then on I haven't stopped doing what I love to do and don't see an end in sight.
